We’ve compiled some handy frequently asked questions (FAQs) about children’s dentistry for families in the Fairfield community. If there’s anything else you would like to know, please do not hesitate to call us or visit our practice.

What age should my child see a dentist?

As a rule of thumb, it’s time for a dental visit when your baby’s first tooth becomes visible or they reach 12 months old – whichever comes first. If you notice anything you think is out of the ordinary before this time, it’s better to book an appointment straight away.

Children’s early experiences to the dentist can have a big impact on their lives. At Perfect Dental, we offer the best in children’s dentistry in Fairfield NSW and we love making your kids smile.

Should I accompany my child to the dentist?

Young children may feel more calm when they sit on their parent’s lap during their check-up, but as they get older we encourage parents to allow their children to go to dentist unaccompanied. We believe that this helps to foster independence and helps kids to feel more comfortable with dental care.

What are fissure sealants?

We may recommend fissure sealants as a preventive treatment if we notice deep grooves on your child’s teeth, where food and bacteria can easily get trapped and may be difficult to remove. Our dentists can apply fissure sealants to fill in these grooves and lower your child’s risk of dental problems. This treatment is minimally invasive and does not require any injections.

Do baby teeth need to be looked after?

Yes. Just because primary teeth (baby teeth) are going to fall out eventually, that doesn’t mean they can be ignored! If any of these teeth experience decay or become infected, this may affect the development of the permanent tooth below, as well as causing pain and discomfort. Brushing their baby teeth every day will also get children used to taking care of their permanent teeth as they grow up.

How often should children visit the dentist?

We recommend that children visit the dentist every 6 months. This gives our paediatric dentists the chance to monitor their oral health and orthodontic development and to respond faster if we spot signs of a problem. However, the ideal time interval for appointments always depends on your child’s individual needs.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. Modern dental X-rays are safe for children and adults as the amount of radiation involved is extremely low, and is equivalent to the sort of exposure you would receive on a 1-2 hour flight.

Am I eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

In Australia, children aged between two and 18 years may have access to a means-test basic dental care through the public system as part of the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).

Fore more information, or to find out if you are eligible, visit the Department of Human Services website or contact Medicare.

Is free parking available?

Yes. The Fairfield Forum has 750 car spaces located around the centre. For the convenience of our patients, the Centre car park is free for the first 2 hours.

There are also disabled car spaces which are available close to all entrances.
